Smoker Lighting

This one comes up all the time… and I used to really struggle with it. The biggest thing I learned is that there a ton of materials and ways to do it but it’s a process and it takes time. Be patient and take your time to ensure the smoker body itself gets really nice and hot.

I start with some wood chips from animal bedding usually cedar or aspen and fill the smoker about 3/4 of the way full careful not to pack it down. I then use a butane pocket torch to assist lighting the propane torch which really gets the wood chips rolling. Once I have a nice flame going and the smoker is getting hot I start to add some wood pellets from a pellet grill. Once those pellets are going I’ll add a little more wood chips on top. Once you get the smoker body nice and hot it will stay rolling smoke all day!
